Yesterday was a pretty laid back day for me. I used most of it to catch up on rest, do laundry, get organized, and plan out my schedule for Norway. That is until last night...
Summer outdoor music festivals are big here. They last for 2-5 days, usually have at least 2 stages with some having up to 4, plus "private" (indoor) concerts going on at nearby clubs. I looked one up on Google and it had over 100 bands playing with several of them big names from the US and UK. I could hear it from my balcony. Just yesterday, there were 3 festivals going on within 10 minutes from me. The Neptunes (N.E.R.D) were playing at Tivoli Gardens, Wolfmother and The Ting Tings were playing at Beatday at Valby Park, and the biggest DJ's around Europe were spinning at Enghave Park. Did I mention, most of them are free? Yup. Free.
Marin invited me to the Enghave Park festival. It's called Strom. It's a 5 day show featuring the biggest and best DJ's from all over Europe. Normally, I don't listen to much house and techno music but I can appreciate a good DJ. Especially one not using a Macbook which most use now a days. So I hopped on the Metro at 9:30pm and headed out to meet her and her friends. I also figured it would be good to learn this route since it's the same route I need to take when I leave tomorrow morning. I need to take the M train from my station, Orestad, to Norreport, get off, switch to the S train, and take that to Central Station. Enghave station is 2 down from Central so it was a good practice run. Finding the right trains were easy and between the trains and walking, it took me about an hour to finally get there. (I also walked the wrong way from the Enghave station which didn't help). I met up with them and we saw the final Saturday DJ. She's a DJ from the UK named Mary Anne Hobbs who I've actually heard of. She was good. It was a mix of techo and trance. We stayed until she ended at midnight then we headed off to find the afterparty.
Well, the afterparty was packed so we couldn't even get in. By the time we were rejected at the door, it was about 12:30 so I decided to head home. One thing I did NOT know is the S line only runs every HALF HOUR after 12. I walked back to the Enghave station, waited about 10 minutes, and jumped on the train that took me back to Central Station. But it ended there. I got off around 1:05. I looked at the clock and the schedule and the next train towards Osterport (the direction I needed to go to get to Norreport so I could switch back to the M train) wouldn't be departing until 1:30! I only needed to go 2 miles East to the closest Metro station so I walked outside and took a cab to the Nyhavn Metro station (less than a 5 minute drive but would have taken me 20 to walk) and took my M train back to Orestad and walked back to the apartment. I got home around 1:30.
But while I was waiting at the Enghave station for the train back to Central, I was approached by a young kid (maybe 19) who at first spoke to me in Danish. I said "English?" So he spoke to me in English. His name was Christian and he was going to a place called "The Rock" to see a heavy metal band. I asked him what bands he liked and he replied "Slipknot" and "Metallica". I said "I'm from San Francisco, where Metallica is from". So we had a nice discussion about Metallica's origin and music. Then he said "I worship Satan. Mind if I stand here?" I said "nope" because quite frankly, I think he probably worships Satan about as much as I worship God and I was positive if he tried to extract my heart with a grapefruit spoon, I could still take him in a fight. He was tall, kind of chunky, with long blonde hair and wearing all black with black combat boots and a black leather jacket on. We ended up talking for about 20 minutes at the station and on the train and he was actually one of the most polite people I've met so far. He even wished me a "safe trip home". He also invited me to the heavy metal concert which I did decline just in case he was really serious and I didn't feel like being the human sacrifice for the evening. Although he did say he liked Obama.
