Stockholm at night

I had my first true Swedish experience! I had Swedish Meatballs for dinner! Dinner meals here are ridiculously sized so although they may seem expensive, you get a LOT for your money. I got about 12 golf ball sized meatballs, over a PLATEFUL of mashed potatoes with Lindenberry sauce on the side and covered with gravy. The meatballs are very good. They taste like a combination of pork and lamb or beef and lamb. I could be completely wrong, but they taste nothing like Italian meatballs. The mashed potatoes are made with yellow potatoes and hand mashed. There were large chunks of potato. Then mixed with a hearty portion of cream and butter. Let's just say, they were GOOD. Chopped parsley covered the whole thing. Lindenberry sauce tastes like a mild rasberry by itself. Though, mix a little with the mashed potatoes and it brings out the taste of the lindenberry to almost a bitter sauce. It's quite good.

Then we walked around the areas we thought we explored this morning but wanted to see them at night. Well, needless to say, we got pretty lost. I've always had a good sense of direction and at one point I stopped and said I think we're going in the wrong direction. We got our bearings and realized we were on a different ISLAND. While searching for a restaurant to eat at, we had walked in a big circle all the way around the city and were heading away from our hotel. An hour later (yes, that's how far out we had gotten), we made it back to the hotel. We did get to see "Old Town" which is about 8 square blocks of intersecting streets. None are quite wide enough for a car. It's the area that all of the souvenier shops are located. One advertises itself as "Possibly the best souvenier shop in Sweden". I guess their self-esteem is down a little.

Nightlife is happening here with almost every bar being a club too. They are all small though so most of the patrons spill out into the sidewalk/street out in front. Again, some good looking people about. It's kind of funny. They remind me of Vegas clubbers however, they are what the Vegas clubbers wish they were. We got to see what the locals look like though compared to this afternoon which was primarily tourists and there are a LOT of tall men AND women often with the women being only an inch or so shorter than the men with heels. We were also told this is a slow time for Stockholm as most locals are on vacation so traffic is light and everything is geared for tourists. We were approached by a group of older women who were French asking for directions. We said we weren't Swedish but she kept showing us her map. She was looking for the Royal Castle which we did know what direction it was so we just pointed her in the right direction. We saw her later in Old Town and she didn't yell at us or give us the stink eye so I guess she found it.

I can't even describe how beautiful this city is. The air is amazingly clean, even right now (1:38am), it's probably 65 degrees out. The people are friendly, but they aren't rude, but they aren't polite. They rarely say thank you or even greet you. That is just their custom. They go about their business and that's that. Little small talk.

Tomorrow, breakfast here at the hotel then plot out our day. I think we'll hit some of the museums as well as try to catch the double decker open bus city tour. Ok, it's 1:45. Time to go to sleep (even though it's 4:48pm back home)! :-)
